Before I get into my review, I would like clear up a few
questions many people have about who and what is the new Venture
Theatre. Parent company NOVA has taken over the operation of the
theatre and Venture and Rimrock Opera Company offer their own
productions in the building.
Next to Normal is the latest
musical by Venture. A new show straight from Broadway that has
garnered a Tony and a Pulitzer. The material is raw, emotional,
and extremely thought-provoking. It exposes the dark truth of
prescription drugs and how they are often handed out like candy-
to the detriment of the patients’ lives. Normal explores the
depth of loss and the destruction that follows when one has not
been able to let go and move on. The characters as a family unit
are moved through a series of heartbreaking moments and a quest
to bring healing and stability. There is so much truth in this
well-written piece and I believe everyone should experience it.
Lynn Al directs this roller coaster ride with finesse and
power. The cast do a stunning job of portraying this wide-spread
problem of medicating and avoiding life. The set is simple and
stark. A perfect compliment to let the material shine. Each cast
member gives the audience a devastatingly clear portrait of
their torment. There are so many emotions swirling on this stage
and every little bit deserves attention and deep consideration.
I was wowed by Lewis Rawlinson’s (the son) bursting charisma!
Kristin Mayer will wrap you in her pain as the mom. Kyle Trott
will share with you his delicate emotions through his beautiful
singing voice. And, Bridget Mayer will pounce on you with her
painful frustration as the daughter. This is a great
continuation of Venture Theatre and I hope you make it to a
performance.
Tickets can be purchased through the website
and at the theatre for $20-22.
